BESANCON
Replacing ousted Nazi governance, an official addresses the people of Besancon at the Hotel de Ville in what was the Place du 4 Septembre marking the advent of the Third Republic after the dismissal of Napoleon III in 1870. It is now known as the Place du 8 Septembre noting the day of liberation. Besancon was spared in both World Wars with only a four-day battle beginning Sept. 5, 1944 before the 3rd Division captured the city on Sept. 8.
