BESANCON
German Gen. Blaskowitz ordered the 159th Infantry Division, diverted from its route of withdrawal, to hold Besancon until Sept 15. This is the view looking northeast from the Citadelle's walls overlooking the Doubs River bridges on the east side of the old city. For its successful assault on La Citadelle, the 30th Regiment's 1st Battalion was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation.
