CHEMILLA
A French woman greets passing Americans at Chemilla on Sept 4, 1944 as the advancing Allied army moves northeast of Lyon. The German holding action at Montelimar and Lyon allowed a large part of the German Army Group G to retreat through Besancon towards the Belfort Gap. The American army liberated village after village as it continued its pursuit through the countryside in what the soldiers called the "Champagne Campaign".
