BEYOND MONTELIMAR
The gunner, identified as T/4 Joseph Scoggins of Company C, 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion hit this gun position on the first shot from 3,000 yards. At one moment during the Battle for Montelimar, the opposing commanders both felt victory as the German 19th Army commander Weisse was confident he would successfully cross the Drome River by the 27th. Truscott, on the other hand, felt he would control both sides of the Drome River by the end of the same day. The battle ended August 31st when Loriol and Livron fell to the 36th Infantry Division and the road to Lyon was sealed.
