NORTH OF MONTELIMAR
The 3rd Division's part in the cleanup at Montelimar wrapped up at the beginning of September. The 45th Infantry Division had been moving along the right flank through Grenoble; the 36th continued north and the 3rd Division sidled to the 45th's zone to relieve elements at St. Etienne. On the west side of the Rhone River, the French Army and F.F.I. had similarly harassed the retreating elements during the Montelimar battle and now targeted an abandoned Lyon.
