SOUTH OF MONTELIMAR
The rear guard action at Montelimar pivoting on the veteran 11th Panzer Division allowed the Germans to move tens of thousands of troops and civilians with the baggage of nearly two year's of occupation to Lyon and then the Belfort Gap. The fighting at Montelimar, sometimes called the Drome Bowl, was directed by Gen. Truscott through Maj. Gen. John E. Dahlquist, commander of the 36th Infantry Division. Dahlquist's Task Force Butler, failed to fully realize it's obejective early in the battle to hold Hill 300 and block the Germans at La Couccurde. The division's move on Montelimar also failed on August 23. General Dahlquist's battle plans were retrieved by the Germans at one point when a nervous aide abandoned them in a jeep. Dahlquist survived Truscott's displeasure.
