SIEGFRIED LINE

Zigzag trenches on the Siegfried Line near Zweibrucken. After the German's Ardennes and Nordwind offenses in Dec. 1944, the western front stretching easterly from north of Strasbourg was at a stalemate through the winter. The Germans took advantage of this time to fortify the West Wall along it's entire front, a task they had begun in earnest the previous August.
