CIVATAVECCHIA
Photographer Howard Nickelson was sent to the port city of Civatevecchia to capture, on film, "Anzio Annie" in defeat. This shot shows the massive breech of one of the guns. Records show that 523 rounds were fired at Anzio from the two weapons beginning in late March 1944. Look closely and you will see names scraped into the metal by GIs.
