ROME
The 3rd Division was selected to garrison Rome and on June 6 the division command post was ensconced at the University of Rome. The day also brought news of the Normandy landings to the celebrating American troops. Almost immediately, the great triumph of the taking of the Eternal City became "old news" and the bitter battles of the Italian Front which continued to wage until the signing of the German armistice in May 1945 became known as the "Forgotten Front".
