BORGO MONTELLO - ANZIO BEACHHEAD
The 3rd Division HQ was established in a group of buildings known as "The Castle" surrounding the parish of St Annunziata in Borgo Montello along the Nettuno-Isola Bella-Cisterna road about 3 kilometers from Conca to the east. Although the beachhead forces faced little resistance at the time of the landings, by mid-February Field Marshal Kesselring had mustered ten divisions under his 14th Army to face the beachhead. His order, direct from Hitler, was to drive the enemy "abscess south of Rome" back to the sea.
