ANZIO BEACHHEAD
The hospital at Anzio was a busy place handling over 18,000 combat wounded out of 29,200 total Allied casualties for the Anzio action (German casualties are listed at 27,500). The hospital area was not immune to artillery and air attack. It was hit several times during the beachhead stay with medical units suffering 89 killed and 387 wounded.
