ISOLA BELLA - ANZIO BEACHHEAD
The marks of artillery on the Anzio beachhead is seen surrounding Isola Bella. The January advance on Cisterna came within 800 yards of the town before the Germans forced a stalemate. The action around Isola Bella resulted in 30 dead and 58 wounded for the 4th Ranger Battalion. The road beyond the buildings leads to Cisterna at the top of the image. The delayed German counterattack reclaimed Aprilia in the British sector a few days later. They failed to recapture much of the 4.8 kilometer push along 7 miles of the front line from the 7th Regiment and the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment from the previous days.
