ANZIO BEACHHEAD
Battle maps for the 3rd Division gave numbers to the farms and houses in its sector. The buildings were strategically defended by their occupiers. In this photo, American tanks are sidled to the "safe" side of one of the buildings with evidence of the constant bombardment spread throughout the terrain.
