ANZIO BEACHHEAD
At the front, the fighting occurred over very rough, shell-pocked terrain crisscrossed by what the Italians called fossi, the British called wadi, and the Americans called ditches. Note the slit trenches in the upper bank. The destroyed bridge was bypassed by a bulldozer-cut across the banks.
