POZZUOLI, ITALY 1944
3rd Infantry Division Clubmobile
Flo and Liz are surrounded by soldiers and sailors as they help send the 3rd Division to southern France in August 1944. Flo wrote home: "We were on the beaches to say goodbye when the men of the 3rd took ships that carried them to France."
The courage of Red Cross personnel in Italy won the admiration from General Mark W. Clark to the soldiers in the foxholes. One Clubmobile crewmember, Lois N. Berney (a former crewmember with Isabella Hughes) served Ranger battalions in north Africa and Italy. Her decoration for service on the Cassino front by the Rangers was seen as recognition for all the Red Cross personnel in the Mediterranean Theater. [2]
