NAPLES, ITALY 1944
3rd Infantry Division Clubmobile
Flo Wick's "SPECIAL OFFICIAL PASS" to Naples valid through June 5, 1944.
The Red Cross operations in the Mediterranean Theater began in August 1942 under Commissioner William Edward Stevenson. Stevenson's role expanded to serving the recreational activities in Sicily and in Italy for the 5th Army. Close to 100 workers crossed over the Sicily beachhead in July 1943.
Stevenson's wife, Eleanor, organized the Clubmobile units in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. By mid-1944, between northern Africa and Italy, there were over 1,000 Red Cross workers (three-quarters women) staffing forty Clubmobiles and more than 60 clubs. At its height of service, the A.R.C. operated over 1,800 recreation facilities in all theaters.
