John E. Dahlquist

JOHN E. DAHLQUIST (1896-1975) took charge of the 36th Infantry Division (Texas Division) just before the southern France invasion. Born in Minneapolis, Dahlquist graduated from the University of Minnesota as a young lieutenant and then joined the Occupation Forces in Germany after World War I, later finding assignment in the Philippines.
In July, 1942, Dahlquist was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to General Eisenhower in England. He returned to the United States in 1943 where he led the 70th Division before assuming command of the 36th Texan Division.
After the war he served at the Pentagon as deputy director of personnel and in 1949 went back to Germany as commander of the First Infantry Division followed by the command of V Corps. Later he commanded the Fourth Army in the United States.
At the time of his retirement, Gen. Dahlquist was head of the new Continental Army Command that consolidated six armies, the Military District of Washington and all Army field forces.
Dahlquist wore four stars at his retirement. He and his wife rest in Arlington National Cemetery.
