Major General John W. O'Daniel takes command of the beachhead near St. Tropez. The general and his staff were landed at 1044 from Admiral Lowry's command ship USCGC Duane six hours after the first wave. O'Daniel, appointed division commander at Anzio, led the 3rd Division through France, into Germany and craftily directed the division's capture of Berchtesgaden at the end of the European conflict.
