AVIGNON Another view of part of the old city of Avignon. Avignon's history dates to the 6th century B.C. Avignon was the seat of the Catholic papacy in the early 1300s before it returned to Rome in 1377 only to have a second Pope named in Avignon in what was known as the Great Schism during the denouncement of Pope Urban IV. At one point, three popes were named by different factions of the church before being resolved by 1417. photo: dogfacesoldiers collection
