As part of the Seventh Army assault on southern France, VI Corps' three divisions landed August 15-16, 1944 in the French Riviera between Toulon and Cannes. The 3rd Division quickly moved westerly off the beach securing the road network for the units of the First French Army assaulting the port cities of Toulon and Marseille.
