CISTERNA The German Tiger tank was the bane of the Allied tank corps. No match for Allied armor, one defensive action pitted lone soldiers against the tanks who struggled to get close enough to toss a smoke grenade or a white phosphorous grenade onto the rear intake grills. The ventilation fans drew the smoke or phosphorous inside forcing its occupants to vacate hastily. This tank was defeated on the way to Cisterna. photo: courtesy Howard Nickelson
