ANZIO BEACHHEAD

Efforts to rescue the 1st and 3rd Rangers at Cisterna failed. The result was only eight men of those engaged (including 43 men of the 3rd Reconnaissance Troop) returned safely with over 743 taken prisoner, 12 killed, and 36 wounded. The front lines then formed facing Cisterna, which remained in German control until late May. Howard Nickelson took this shot of a fallen soldier from the attacks at the suggestion of front line GIs. The failure at Cisterna led to the dissolution of the Italian Ranger units.
