ANZIO BEACHHEAD

Much of the terrain around Anzio was flat and occupied by modern farms. What little high ground there was (including buildings) served as the most strategic positions. All positions held by the Allies were under constant observation and within artillery range. Exploding shells from the famous German rail guns known as Anzio Annie were a daily occurrence on the beachhead.
