Efforts to rescue the Rangers at Cisterna failed. The fighting retreat resulted in only six men of the 767 in the two units returning safely. The front lines then formed facing Cisterna, which remained in German control for the next three months. Howard Nickelson took this shot of a fallen soldier from the attacks at the suggestion of front line GIs. The failure at Cisterna led to the dissolution of the Italian Ranger units.
