FRANCE 1944
3rd Infantry Division Clubmobile

Liz Elliott and Flo Wick pose with the commandeered German Kubelwagen they pressed into service as an A.R.C. Clubmobile in France for about a month during the fall of 1944. The limited service of the Kubelwagen ended during a visit to a battalion artillery unit. As Flo and Janet were moving to another area, the wiring caught fire and they leapt out "the only working door" to see the gas tank explode. Unharmed and "undaunted" the girls hitched back to camp and set out later that day in another vehicle. The Red Cross News covered the story and the report for Unit B's accident: "Total damage: one Volkswagen and 1,500 donuts."

Millions of Americans volunteered or worked at home and in the war zones for the American Red Cross. By the end of the war, 86 American Red Cross workers and volunteers (34 men and 52 women) lost their lives with several more injured.
