POZZUOLI, ITALY 1944
3rd Infantry Division Clubmobile

Liz Elliott serves the 803rd Ordnance Company in Pozzuoli, Italy mid-July 1944.

It was not always Red Cross women who staffed Clubmobiles in the Mediterranean. Until the Clubmobile units gained the trust of unit commanders, many did not want women in the forward areas. British Field Marshall Montgomery was especially against it. In Sicily, the first Clubmobile units were all men until two women each were allowed to join the units in the field. It was 5th Army Commander Mark Clark that pushed for more units and forward service in October 1943 in Italy. The first unit in Italy to request a permanent attachment was the 45th Infantry Division followed by the 3rd Division.
